Seeking Geek Mythology TriviaA while back on talk.bizarre, someone asked for information about the Sirens of Greek mythology, and briefly described them as monsters. Someone else posted a reponse, whose form was somewhat similar to the following, correcting the definition of who the Sirens were, and describing how they fit into Greek mythology. It struck me that the Sirens had certain parallels in modern society.
The two Sirens aren't Sirens. The Sirens are seductive concepts who sing so beautifully of process and technology improvements that they lure developers captivated by their song to steer their projects and crash on unrealistic schedules. The two monsters that must be navigated between are legacy systems and unenlightened managers. One steals developers from new projects with hundreds of long tentacles; the other creates a whirling vortex which destroys projects. |
