Rants |
A B SeizureIn kindergarten I learned a song: A, B, C, D, E, F, G; H, I, J, K, elemental P. It was a long time before I learned that "elemental" was actually "L, M, N, O." "Elemental P" raised exciting possibilities, even though I had no idea what an element was. When I did learn about elements, I looked forward to knowing that element P would be that delightful alkali metal, Potassium. But it was not to be; potassium was known as K, while boring lead got "Pb" without even having a "P" in its name! And P went to phosphorus, whose incendiary possibilities pale beside those of potassium. The song continues: Q, R, S, T, U, V, W; ..... (?) Now I've learned my ABCs. I can't remember the rest of the song; the rest of the alphabet doesn't fit in the tune. Clearly, no one really cares about X, Y, and Z. Robert Fulghum was right. Everything I need to know, I learned in kindergarten: By the time I learn the truth, it is too late. Those who deserve recognition will not get it. Expect disappointment. Those who find their place at the end will be forgotten and overlooked. |
