Tutorials

Note:

The deadline has passed for submission of tutorial, workshop, presentation, and panel proposals. Please do not submit a proposal for these session types without first checking with Cara Marlin or Thyra Rauch.

Submissions for posters remain open until March 1, 1999.

Tutorials allow participants to enhance specific usability skills through formally prepared half-day or full-day or two-day sessions. Audience sizes range from 30 to 100 participants. One-half to one-third of the session must involve audience participation.

Submission guidelines

Tutorials submissions must consist of a cover page, a description, and background information about the instructor(s).

For online submissions, please prepare your documents in either Microsoft Word format (version 6 preferred), or rich text format, or plain text. The presenter's background may be either a separate file or included in the session description.

Cover page (1 page)

Download and complete the printable cover page (PDF file, 72K); mail or fax this to Cara Marlin, as directed on the cover page, along with your description and background documents. Alternatively, you may send your submission online.

Description (2 pages minimum, 3 pages maximum)

Due to the blind review process, the review panel will receive only your description for review, so some information on the cover page must be repeated in the description. Do not include your name, product name or institution on any page of the description.

Your description must include the following:

  • Title (include the title on each page of the description)
  • Topic area (one of the following: methodology, organizational issues, skills and skill development, or tools and technology)
  • Length (half-day, 3 1/2 hours; or full-day, 7 hours; or two-day, 14 hours)
  • Outline (a description of the topics the tutorial will cover, as well as what participants will learn)
  • Timeline for the session (keep in mind that one-third to one-half of the tutorial must be allocated to audience participation)
  • Proposed session size that you feel is appropriate for your tutorial (between 30 and 100)

See tutsubmt.doc (22K), tutsubmt.rtf (26K), or tutsubmt.pdf (151K) for a sample submission. (If you have problems downloading the samples, see our cautions and alternatives.)

Your background (1 page)

On a separate page, describe the background and experience of each instructor relative to the tutorial. Include name(s) and institution(s). This page will not go to the review panel.

Dates

All submissions must be postmarked, faxed, or e-mailed by October 1, 1998. Tutorials will take place on June 29 and 30, 1999.

Additional requirements

Instructors will be required to provide instructional materials by March 1, 1999.

Benefits for instructors

Because our membership has responded so well to our current tutorial offerings, we are expanding our selection for 1999. To encourage more submissions, we are pleased to offer a more generous compensation plan as follows. One instructor per tutorial will receive:

  • A base rate of $2000 for a two-day tutorial, $1000 for a full-day tutorial, or $500 for a half-day for 30 registered participants.
  • Between 31 and 50 participants, you will receive an additional $150 for two-day tutorials or $75 for each registered participant ($37.50 for half-day tutorials).
  • Between 51 and 100 participants, you will receive an additional $100 for two-day tutorials or $50 for each registered participant ($25.00 for half-day tutorials).
